a 2nd look at RTL
Revelation Theory of Learning
"The learning process requires not only hearing, seeing, and association; it also requires the ability to properly retrieve from the deep recesses of your mind at another time."
John Connor
The pursuit of knowledge is a complex and collaboratively conscious, intelligent, rational, deliberate, and significantly methodical effort. It is indeed a dynamic structure in that it refers to a whole whose frames are cognitional operations, which are uniquely distinct yet functionally associated. There is little doubt that the process of understanding is a dynamic structure that encompasses experiencing, understanding, reasoning, and deciding.
Revelation Theory of Learning (RTL) is an instructional and learning method that integrates the psychology of learning and technology resulting in a multi-sensory and well-orchestrated approach to learning that encompasses the significant factors of experiences, understanding, reasoning, and deciding. RTL is significantly more than just the integration of technology; it is essentially the melding of the psychology of learning with efficient and rapid technology integration to optimize student attention to learning. It is multisensory learning that emphasizes visuals (inclusive of short digital video segments and pictures) and is paired with auditory delivery of non-sophisticated language. It was “coined” Revelation Theory of Learning because the non-biblical meaning of the word Revelation is ideal (a significant disclosure of something not previously known or realized) and the word Revelation happens to (coincidently) act as a mnemonic device for the seven attributes of the theory. R is for Repetition (optimized); EV is for effective video segments and visuals; EL is for effective language (not sophisticated language); A is for associating the material to the learners' previous experiences; TI is for technology that is rapidly integrated and interactive; O is for observation of learners to discern comprehension of learning outcomes; and N is for nonbiased delivery of materials in a Modern Socratic methodology to initiate critical thinking in learners; thus, enhancing cognition/thinking and ultimately learning.
Repetition optimized
Effective Visuals
Effective Language
Association
Technology (rapidly) Integrated
Observation of learners
Non-biased delivery of instruction
All of these attributes positively affect and motivate the delivery of the curriculum and instruction in pre-school through college. This theory applies to instructors at any level or setting, as well as most all career areas (i.e., medical science career areas). Revelation Theory of Learning (RTL) is a proven and cost-effective universal instructional method that optimizes learning. It should be emphasized that it is significantly more than the application of technology in education; RTL orchestrates effective use of technology with the application of psychology-of-learning principles to sustain information transfer.
The theory embraces technology (i.e., digital video projection, SMART board application, rapid access to and from websites with simulations, avatar integration, and multimodal instructional delivery) and is melded with psychological learning principles (i.e., gaining/sustaining attention; maximizing retention by association; and tapping into auditory, tactile, and visual learning channels); thus, learning is optimized.
The proper application of RTL optimizes learning (i.e., retention) and sustains attention; thus, minimizes discipline issues and facilitates the creation of the ideal classroom environment (ICE). ICE is essentially where instructors and learners together are truly effective. They can laugh, have significant worth/value, are content, can share and; thus, have become a significantly effective learning community.
